The Organic MediZen Story
Who is Maritza Worthington?
“Sometimes one’s darkest moments and greatest feats can serve to illuminate a path of purpose. I firmly believe that when something so unexpected presents itself, change is no longer a matter of question, but rather an urgent solution that one must pursue relentlessly.”
My self-healing journey led me to help people take charge of their health & wellness, but before I could get to this point I had to learn and discover what self-healing and nutrition meant for me.
When I was a teenager I struggled to feel comfortable in my own skin. Although I was fit and had many friends because I was on a dance team, deep down I always felt like I was hiding who I really was from the world. A closet misfit.
Not many people knew that I was battling some major issues, mainly because it wasn’t anything that was super-apparent from the outside…
I was diagnosed with lumbar scoliosis at the age of 15. The doctors told me that I had a 38degree curvature in my lower spine. Surgery was recommended for a 40degree curvature, so I was presented the option. I quickly refused.
I thought it was too high-risk, and was honestly horrified by the thought of metal rods and screws being placed in my body. After all I still thought myself to be a pretty good dancer despite my slantedness. So I settled for option #2: a Boston brace.
Of course I refused to wear the thing during school hours; and believe me, there was no way I could hide wearing a back brace (I tried).
I called the whole thing “social suicide” and my mom eventually stopped suggesting it. The compromise was that I would wear it when I got home from school everyday.
So I did, and I cried myself to sleep many, many nights…
The reason I bring this up is because typically when a person thinks about “body image issues” they’ll imagine someone who has struggled with weight or a noticeable disability, but I think it’s also important to note that some of us wear our scars on the inside. And in the end, body issues are body issues regardless of whether or not they are visible to the naked eye…
So after the doctors eventually told me that nothing else could be done about the scoliosis, I set out to discover ways to manage my pain and strengthen my body. This was when I first realized that doctors couldn’t solve everything, and that I would have to find an alternative route to manage my condition.
I wish I could say that this is where things turned around for me, but things got a whole lot stranger before the great epiphany came.
At the age of 22, I had a pretty close call. My urologist told me that my kidney was on the verge of bursting. Yes, bursting – and I’m not being dramatic either. She literally said, “Your kidney can explode if you don’t have surgery within the next 24 hours…”
In case you’re curious, the diagnosis is called hydronephrosis and it resulted from a ureter blockage (caused by a major vein) that had affected my horseshoe kidney from filtering properly.
(And yes I do believe that the kidney issue is linked to the scoliosis—and this was confirmed by a holistic doctor).
During my kidney recovery, I made a personal contract with myself as I vowed to get well and help others do so too. I let go of my food addictions, and was committed to cleaning up my diet and life.
The first thing I did was set out to get my NASM personal training certification and enroll in a few college nutrition courses. This was my start in holistic health.
But the more I came to know, the more I yearned to learn. Holistic health became my obsession, but hey at least it was a healthy one lol…
I’ve now received several certifications, am enrolled in a Masters program, and have been mentored by some of the best within functional medicine.
- CPT- Certified Personal Trainer, NASM
- CHNC- Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant
- CNPM- Certified Natural Products Manufacturer
- FNS- Functional Nutrition Specialist
- M.S – Master of Science in Nutrition & Functional Medicine (in progress)
I am now solely convinced that chronic issues, conditions and diseases are BEST treated naturally and functionally.
And I believe with every cell of my being that I am here to empower others to take charge of their health, as well as encourage women to rise above their body image issues and heal themselves naturally.
There’s a great awakening that’s happening right now and I am here to pave the way for self-healers who are looking beyond conventional thought & are ready to be apart of this new era of health & wellness.
